Credit Counseling Requirements for Bankruptcy
Anyone who wishes to file for bankruptcy – both chapter 7 and chapter 13 – must complete a pre-filing credit counseling program and receive a certificate of counseling from an approved non-profit agency within 180 days prior to filing for bankruptcy. After filing, a debtor must complete a person financial management course with an approved non-profit agency and submit another certificate of debtor education to the court within 45 days of the first meeting of creditors, or they will not receive a discharge.
